Effective self-care addresses every aspect of a caregiver’s life – emotional, physical, social, mental, and spiritual. Practices to support each of these areas must be put in place and acted on to avoid compassion fatigue and burnout. Compassionate caregivers are like sponges, absorbing pain from their care recipients, while depleting their energy in the act of selfless giving. They must tune in to their bodies and minds to release the absorbed pain, along with their own internal pain. They also need to recharge their energy reserves using self-care to stay resilient in their valuable profession.
